Working on this piece made me realize a unique style that I had found that combines my love of ink and paint. I explore various shapes with geometric lines by playing with composition and painting stencils. These elements create a colorful pattern that compliments her rich brown skin. Using expressive brush strokes, I simplify the female form and paint what it means to embody the beauty that is natural hair.
Woman of color
Acrylic and Ink on canvas
This work focuses on colors, shapes, and textures that is surrounded by the idea of naturality. I painted this portrait of my sister because I was inspired by her decision to embrace the natural texture of her hair. I wanted to capture the essence of black women’s skin by incorporating primary colors to show a level of learning more about the history of her hair. The colors are also used as the building blocks to show the foundation of what a woman's natural hair is.
